Invoice for a given percentage of a fixed amount
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:54:58 am »
It would be great if I could invoice for a percentage of a fixed amount without having to create an expense item to cover it. Example: I have a contract for a lump sum fee of $5,000.00. But I want to be able to bill at at the following intervals: 15%, 35%, 75%, 80%, and 100% of the total project cost. Is that currently possible? If so, how? If not, could it be?

Thanks for the great product!

Sorry no.  Fixed amount projects (the non-resuable ones) can only be billed once they are completed.  You could ask your client for Payment and put them in as unapplied payments, but you will not be able to generate any interim invoice for them.  We will do not have a way to do what you are asking and is unlikely that we can do that.

The only thing that I can think if you want to attempt something like this is to add yourself as a Client and bill all the time against that so you will have a running total of how much time you spent.  Then create an Expense, billed to your Client, for each interim bill and create a separate invoice for each one, however keep in mind that each invoice will have a unique invoice number.

I would humbly suggest you reconsider this request. I bill both ways, some time only and some fixed bid projects.

Doesn't make sense for you not to want to add this feature.

Hi Greg,

You can bill for time or bill flat rate projects.  But for long term Fixed Amount Projects, you can only bill when it is marked as "Completed".  That prevents you from billing the client for the same project more than once.

What he was asking for was to have a single "incremental" invoice.  That is an invoice for $750, then for the same invoice, on another date, to bill $1000, then $2000, etc.

That's also something I am looking for.

I have a 3 month project that is being billed in increments. One at the start, then again at 30, 60 and 90 days. Each invoice is a percentage of the total project.

It would be great to have a fixed cost project, then, when creating the invoice, I can specify an amount to bill against that project.

Right now, I have to create 4 different fixed cost projects, add a single time entry, mark the project complete, and the create the invoice.

I would like to be able to create an invoice for a fixed cost project, not requiring any time entries, and also be able to choose the amount to bill (partial, full, or remainder).
