Running iPad & iPhone concurrently
« on: July 04, 2018, 08:41:34 am »
Can I copy my current iPad data to my new iPhone and have both sync? Or failing that can I back up the latest iPad to my new iPhone without losing data on my iPad?

You can do a Backup to Dropbox (from within TM) and Restore to the other device.  If they *both* contain different data you *will* loose data on the device that you restore to.  You would need to purchase the optional Synchronization module in order to sync between the two without loosing data in that scenario.

If your iPhone has nothing on it, you can backup from your iPad and restore to the iPhone with no issues.  Doing a Backup on a device does not delete anything.  It only makes a "snapshot" of everything in TM from that device at that moment in time.

Thanks Adam,

I've got TM running on a 1st Gen iPad, which unfortunately Dropbox is no longer supported on. So I guess the Sync module won't work in this situation?

Here's what you would need to do.  Hook up your old iPad to iTunes.  In iTunes select the iPad and under the iPad there is an item called "File Sharing".  Click on that.  In the "Apps" column, select Time Master.  On the left hand side it should say "Time Master Documents".  Highlight the "database.rsd" file, then click on "Save..." at the bottom and save it to your Desktop (or some other place you can find it easily.

On your iPhone (assuming that you have not entered any data on it yet, otherwise a Restore will erase that), do a Backup to Dropbox (DB).  Open up DB and find the Time Master Backups folder.  Look at the name of the file.  It should look something like "Adam's iPad_551902566.rsd".  Now take the backup file from above and rename it with the numbers, so it may look something like "database_55192600.rsd" (I like to round the number up just a little bit as it is the Date & Time).  Then put that file into DB from your computer.  Do a Refresh of DB in TM.  The file should now be there and you can Restore that data to your new iPhone.

Thanks for that Adam, will a purchased sync module work and keep both iPad and iPhone synced having done that procedure? Or is this just for transferring the data to my new device?

No, you don't need the Sync module for that.  I'm not sure that you can install the Sync module on the old iPad, since it won't be able to run the latest version of TM.  That would allow you to transfer the data to the new device.
